UT Grinds Through Day Two of Volunteer Showdown
November 07, 2020 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Graduate student Luca Wiedenmann's seventh consecutive singles victory of the Fall season—a win which upped his career total to 90 singles wins, pushing him into a tie for 15th all-time in program history—highlighted an up-and-down day for Tennessee at day two of the Volunteer Showdown.
UT set the tone early by grabbing wins in three of four doubles matches against duos from South Carolina.
Seniors Andrew Rogers and Mark Wallner kept it rolling this morning. Their 6-4 victory against the Gamecocks' duo of Daniel Rodrigues and Connor Thomson marked their fifth consecutive victory as a pair, upping their Fall ledger to 5-0.
Both players also knocked off their singles opponents with a quick 6-1, 6-4 straight set win for Wallner and 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 hard fought triumph for Rogers.
Wiedenmann opened singles action claiming the aforementioned victory over USC's Jake Beasley, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. He is now tied with VFL's Hunter Reese and Chris Mahony on UT's all-time singles win list.
The duos of graduate student Joel Gamorov and freshman Johannus Monday as well as junior Martim Prata and freshman Josh Raab blitzed past their respective opponents with 6-2 victories.
Raab later bounced back from his singles defeat yesterday, taking down Andreas Kramer of MTSU, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (4).
The morning singles matches proved no trouble for senior Adam Walton and freshman Johannus Monday, both claiming straight-set victories. Walton defeated Raphael Lambling, 6-3, 6-3, while Monday bulldozed past USC's Carter Morgan, 6-0, 6-1.
Junior Pat Harper found his rhythm in the third set as he battled past junior Gamecock Beau Pelletier, 6-2, 0-6, 6-4.
South Carolina's Daniel Rodrigues ended graduate student Giles Hussey's eight match win streak with a 6-3, 6-1 win over the Orange & White's Englishman.
Gamerov fell to SC's Toby Samuel, 6-2, 6-1, and Prata fell to USC sophomore Connor Thomson, 2-6, 6-0, 6-4.
In the afternoon session, the MTSU tandem of Oskar Michalek and Andreas Kramer could not stop the dynamic force of Prata and Raab, 6-4.
Raab later suffered a tough loss in singles against MTSU's Sean Presson, 7-6(4), 2-6, 1-0(4).
Hussey recovered from his morning defeat with a quick straight set win in the afternoon against MTSU's Kramer, 6-2, 6-2 to close day two in Knoxville.
The third and final day of the Volunteer Showdown resumes tomorrow morning, with the Vols taking on MTSU in session two, with doubles play slated to start at 2 p.m. ET.
