Lady Vols Dominant in Season-Opener
January 12, 2020 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee women's tennis team opened the season 2-0 as they defeated North Alabama by a score of 7-0 twice in Sunday's doubleheader.
"The girls did an excellent job of coming out here and being focused from start to finish," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "In doubles, we are trying to take our game as a whole to another level. We are talking about energy, decision-making, confidence and execution. I think everybody this afternoon played better tennis than we did this morning. It will be nice to have a day off, mentally more than anything else, regroup and get ready for Michigan."
The doubles pair of sophomore Rebeka Mertena and freshman Hadley Doyle opened their first match of day with a 6-1 victory on court two. The duo followed with a 6-3 victory on court one in the second match.
In singles play, Doyle was dominant in her collegiate debut. The freshman defeated North Alabama's Kalais Going 6-0, 6-0 to start the day on court four then defeated Nina Linke 6-0, 6-0 to close out the day.
"We've all been excited about adding Callie Creath, Hadley Doyle, and Carly Briggs to the team and getting Julie Ball out here," Ojeda said. "I thought those girls did an outstanding job representing Tennessee the way we want to be represented."
In singles, No. 76 Mertena opened her day with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Nina Linke on court three. She followed with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Payton Andrews on court two in the second match.
The Lady Vols won a combined 12 singles matches in straight-sets, and six doubles matches on Sunday. Lady Vols held their opponents to zero games in 10 sets throughout the day.
Up next, the Lady Vols will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to compete in the Michigan Invitational beginning on Jan. 17.
