Tennessee is set to host the 23rd annual Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at Cherokee Country Club
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Tennessee women's golf team is scheduled to host the 23rd annual Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship starting on Monday.
The field features a 16-team field with the Lady Vols as one of five teams from the state of Tennessee. They are joined by Chattanooga, East Tennessee State, Memphis and Middle Tennessee State while the Lady Vols and LSU are the two SEC representatives.
In the tournament's history, Tennessee has taken home the team title three times while also having three players win the individual title over the years. The Lady Vols have finished in the top three in the tournament nine times with the last coming in 2017.
Last season, Tennessee tied for fifth on the team leaderboard while Mikayla Bardwell was the top Lady Vol on the individual leaderboard, posting a seventh place finish in her second collegiate tournament. She was 3-over-par for the event, firing a collegiate-low 69 in the second round.
Freshman Nicole Whiston is coming into her first home tournament with plenty of momentum after a top-20 finish in the Cougar Classic last week in Charleston, South Carolina. She was one of just 10 players in the field to have all three rounds be par or better, posting a 2-under-par score.
She will be joined by her older sister, junior Waverly Whiston, at the top of the Tennessee lineup after Waverly had the second highest finish of any Lady Vol at the Cougar Classic, tying for 43rd.
The first round is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. (ET) at Cherokee Country Club. Tennessee will be paired with LSU and Eastern Kentucky in a shotgun start.
