Tennessee is tied for eighth at the 23rd annual Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship entering the final round of play
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – After the opening two rounds of the 23rd annual Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship, two University of Tennessee women's golfers sit in the top 15 on the leaderboard.
For the fourth consecutive round, freshman Nicole Whiston is the top Lady Vol on the individual leaderboard as she was helped by her fourth round of par or better of the season
She opened up the tournament with a score of 70 (-1) in round one. After entering the final nine holes, 1-over-par she quickly carded a pair of birdies in the next three holes.
Whiston was tied for 10th entering the second round and was one of just two freshmen in the field to have a score of par or better in the first round. She will go into Tuesday as the second highest freshman on the individual leaderboard.
Sophomore Mariah Smith, who is playing in the tournament as an individual, is tied with Whiston on the leaderboard at 1-over and 15th. After being tied for 30th thru 18 holes, Smith moved up 15 spots on the leaderboard in round two, tying Whiston for the low round of the day by a Lady Vo, with a 70 (-1) to wrap up the day.
She was one of four Tennessee players to jump up double-digit spots in the second round as redshirt freshman Shelby Liford moved up 15 spots, senior Micheala Williams leaped 16 positions and junior Waverly Whiston jumped up 12 spots.
Tennessee will tee off the final round tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. ET between holes No. 6 and 8. The Lady Vols will be paired with Augusta (+17) and Mercer (+25) who are tied for seventh and ninth, respectively.
