KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 15/19 Tennessee men's tennis team opened up SEC play with Georgia at home on Friday night, falling to the Bulldogs 4-2 at Barksdale Stadium.
Walker Duncan and Emil Reinberg defeated Tennessee's Pat Harper and Adam Walton, 6-3, on court two to begin the doubles action, but Timo Stodder and Preston Touliatos knocked off Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinski, 6-2, on center court to split the first two doubles matches.
The doubles point came down to the final pairing of Trent Bryde and Philip Henning for Georgia and the Vols duo of Andrew Rogers and Martim Prata. The Bulldogs pair won, 6-4, on court three to give UGA the 1-0 lead.
Georgia (5-3) took two more quick points in the start of singles action with Loeb defeating Prata 6-1, 6-2 on court five and Bryde stifling Scott Jones 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 on court number three.
Tennessee (9-2) fought on, forcing the remaining matches to go three sets. Luca Wiedenmann scored the Vols first point with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 triumph in the six spot over Duncan. Stodder, ranked No. 113 nationally in singles, faced off with 5th-ranked Zielinski at center court.
Stodder fell in the first set 4-6 but rallied and took the second 6-4. The final set was a back-and-forth affair with neither player gaining much of an advantage, forcing the set into a tiebreaker. Stodder came out firing in the tiebreaker and took it 7-3, winning the match 4-6, 6-4, 7-6.
On court four, Touliatos went down to Henning 3-6 in the first set before rallying to win the second 6-1. Touliatos was down again in the third set with Henning needing just one point to win, but the Birmingham, Ala., native rallied again to force another tiebreaker. Unfortunately, it didn't go Tennessee's way as Touliatos fell 2-7, dropping the final set 6-7.
Walton and Reinberg went unfinished on court two, playing to a 4-6, 6-2, 3-5 match when UGA clinched on court four.
UP NEXT: The Big Orange go on the road next week as they continue SEC play. Tennessee starts the road trip at LSU on March 7 before taking on Texas A&M on March 9.
