#20 Tennessee Sweeps Doubleheader, Defeating Wichita State and The Citadel
February 03, 2019 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The 20th-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team swept a doubleheader matchup at Barksdale Stadium on Sunday with a 5-2 win over Wichita State and a 7-0 win over The Citadel. With the two victories, the Vols move to 5-1 on the season.
A three-set victory by junior Luca Wiedenmann clinched the 5-2 victory over Wichita State for the Big Orange.
Wiedenmann rebounded from a first set loss (3-6), to take the final two sets, 6-0, 6-3, to secure the win for the Vols during the first match of the day.
After taking the doubles point, UT collected straight-set victories from sophomore Adam Walton on court 2 (7-5, 7-6, 4), redshirt senior Preston Touliatos (6-2, 6-2) on court 4 and freshman Pat Harper on court 6 (6-4, 7-6, 3) in addition to Wiedenmann's win.
Wiedenmann and Touliatos each won two singles matches and two doubles matches on the day.
"We have a couple guys here that are getting it," Tennessee head coach Chris Woodruff said. "But we need more than a couple. Preston Touliatos is doing a great job. Luca Wiedenmann is doing a good job. We just have to keep working. It is a long season. That number by our name means nothing right now. We will just see where we are in May. We will get better. We have a hard-working group of guys."
Against The Citadel, the Vols opened up the match by sweeping the doubles point with wins from Walton and Wiedenmann (8-0) and Rogers and Prata (8-4).
Going into singles play with a 1-0 advantage, Wiedenmann won his match (6-0, 6-2) on court 3 in dominant fashion by being the first one off the court. Shortly behind him was Harper, defeating his opponent 6-3, 6-2 on court 5.
The Vols kept up success on the courts with a 6-1, 6-1 victory for Touliatos on court 1 and a 6-2, 6-1 win for junior Scott Jones on court 2. Wrapping up the 7-0 win for Tennessee were wins from sophomore Andrew Rogers (6-3, 6-3) and freshman Martim Prata (6-4, 6-4).
UP NEXT: The Tennessee Volunteers travel to Orlando, Fla., at the USTA National Campus for a dual match against Duke on Feb. 9. The first serve is set for 5 p.m. The match will be nationally televised on the Tennis Channel.
