Vols Defeat Charlotte Twice to Start Tennis Season
January 19, 2019 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The 19th-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team opened the 2019 team season Saturday with a doubleheader victory over Charlotte inside Goodfriend Tennis Center.
After losing the doubles point in both matches, the Vols (2-0) rallied for a 4-3 win in the first match and a 6-1 score in the second.
In the first match, the Vols won four of six first sets in singles and turned all those fast starts into team points. Senior Timo Stodder was first off the court with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Luca Keist on court 1, followed by junior Scott Jones on court 3 and senior Preston Touliatos on court 4.
Freshman Pat Harper clinched his first dual match with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Oliver Sec on court 5. The 49ers won the last two matches to narrow the final score to 4-3.
The Vols rolled in singles in the second match, winning them all in straight sets. Jones wrapped up the 6-1 team win with a 7-6, 6-1 win against Ignasi De Rueda on court 2. It was the highest in the lineup Jones has played in his career; the junior enters the spring ranked a career-best No. 75.
Saturday marked the career debut for freshman Martim Prata, who joined the Vols earlier this month from Lisbon, Portugal. He won the first set but lost to Henry Lieberman 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 on court 6 in the first match.
NOTABLE: The Vols also opened the 2018 season with a doubleheader sweep against Charlotte to start Chris Woodruff's head coaching career ... Timo Stodder now has 81 career singles victories, which ties for 20th in Tennessee program history (Woodruff; Fabio Silberberg). It takes 98 wins to crack the top 10 ... The Vols have three Australian players in the lineup (Jones, Walton, Harper) for the first time since 2001.
UP NEXT: Tennessee heads to Florida State next week for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, which acts as a two-day qualifying event for the national indoor championships. The Vols first face Tulane on Saturday (Jan. 26) at 11 a.m. Florida State plays Texas Tech in the other day one match.
QUOTES
Chris Woodruff, Tennessee Head Coach
"I like Pat Harper. From where he was in the fall, I needed to see him do it in a match. I thought he was pretty consistent today. Two good matches. I thought he was better in the second match. He's learning my style of coaching, and I'm really encouraged about that. I liked the way Preston as a senior stepped up. I had a few words with him and he responded. I thought everyone responded. I challenged Scotty Jones a little bit, moved him higher in the lineup. He may or may not play there, but I wanted to see what he had. I thought the second match singles was better. The scorelines were solid and I thought we worked hard."
