#18 Vols Lose ITA Kick-Off Opener to Tulane, 4-2
January 26, 2019 | Men's Tennis
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The 18th-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team lost 4-2 in a back-and-forth match to Tulane on Saturday at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center to start the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
The Vols (2-1) won the doubles point but quickly lost momentum to start singles, dropping five of six first sets. Five matches eventually went three sets, but Tulane secured the points it needed to clinch.
Tulane took a 3-2 lead when 42nd-ranked Luis Erlenbusch defeated 75th-ranked Scott Jones 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 on court 2, putting the fate of the match on courts 1 and 6.
Senior Timo Stodder and Ewan Moore played to a third-set tiebreaker. Stodder fended off one match point in the breaker to tie it at 6-6. He could not save the second, however, as Moore secured the match for the Green Wave 6-4, 6-7(2), 7-6(6).
Junior Luca Wiedenmann, who led a set and 5-1 in the second at one point, was on serve at 6-5 in the third against Tim Ruetzel on court 6 when the match was clinched.
Tennessee will now play Texas Tech on Sunday at 11 a.m. in a consolation match.
The Vols rolled out a new-look doubles lineup in dominating fashion. Preston Touliatos and Pat Harper rolled away with a 6-2 victory on court 1; seconds later, Andrew Rogers and Martim Prata won by the same score on court 3. It was Prata's first career win in Tennessee uniform after joining the team in January.
Tulane took five first sets and tied the match at 1-1 when 58th-ranked Tyler Schick defeated Preston Touliatos 7-5, 6-2 on court 5. That was the only straight-set match as the rest went three with the Vols slowly turning momentum on multiple courts.
Dane Esses gave Tulane the lead with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 win over freshman Pat Harper. The Vols tied the match at 2-2 when sophomore Adam Walton came from a break down in the second set to beat Hamish Stewart 1-6, 6-4, 7-5.
