Bunny Shaw's fifth-career multi-goal performance guides UT past ETSU.
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Senior forward Bunny Shaw netted a pair of goals to help lead No. 9 Tennessee past ETSU 4-0 Thursday night at Summers-Taylor Stadium. It was the fourth-straight shutout victory for the Volunteers as goalkeepers Shae Yanez and Charli Pogany combined for the clean sheet.
Shaw opened the scoring in the 14th minute in her first game back from World Cup qualifying with the Jamaican Women's National Team. Taking a pass from freshman forward Amy Thompson, Shaw dribbled to the center of the box and fired a shot into the back netting from 14 yards out.
Tennessee (6-0-1) doubled its lead on Shaw's second tally of the match, receiving a long pass from Mackenzie Gouner and converting from the middle of the box in the 49th minute. Thursday's performance marks the fifth multi-goal game of Shaw's career and the first this season.
Junior midfielder MA Vignola put the Vols ahead 3-0 in the 55th minute. Following a long volley from Abbey Burdette and a header pass from Shaw, Vignola one-timed a shot off the post before sending the rebound past the Buccaneer keeper.
Coming off the bench, Anna Bialczak erased any doubt with Tennessee's fourth goal of the match in the 77th minute. Emma Dize recorded her first-career assist on a cross into the box, setting Bialczak up from point blank range for the easy score.
Tennessee outshot ETSU (1-6-0) 21-7 for the match while holding a dominant 12-0 edge in corner kicks. Yanez and Pogany each collected one save apiece, while fouls were nearly even at 5-4 in favor of the Big Orange.
The Vols controlled play for much of the first half, outshooting ETSU 13-4 over the opening 45 minutes of action. Katie Cousins attempted seven corner kicks while the UT backline allowed zero corners in the first period.
UP NEXT: Tennessee will head to Cookeville, Tenn. for its second-straight in-state road matchup at Tennessee Tech on Sunday, Sept. 9. Kickoff between the Vols and Golden Eagles is set for 7 p.m. ET.
