September 16, 2018 | Soccer
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – No. 11 Tennessee suffered its first loss of the season to No. 15 South Carolina, as the Gamecocks defeated the Volunteers 2-0 on a rainy Sunday evening at Regal Soccer Stadium.
USC's Lauren Chang tallied the difference-maker in the eighth minute, bending a corner kick from the right side into the upper-left netting for her fourth goal of the season. USC doubled its advantage in the 74th minute as Riley Tanner found the back of the net off a cross from Ryan Gareis.
Tennessee striker Bunny Shaw led all players with six shot attempts on the night, with five of those coming in the second half. Senior midfielder Anna Bialczak tallied three shots with two on-target, while both of MA Vignola's attempts were on goal.
The Vols (6-1-1, 0-1-0 SEC) came out of the halftime locker room aggressively, outshooting the Gamecocks (7-1-0, 1-0-0 SEC) 13-4 over the final 45 minutes. South Carolina keeper Mikayla Krzeczowski made a handful of key saves, including a diving block on a straight-on line drive shot from Bialczak in the 66th minute that was Tennessee's closest chance of the match.
South Carolina controlled play for a majority of the first half as shots were 8-4 in favor of the Gamecocks. USC also held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks over the first 45 minutes of action.
For the match, Tennessee registered seven shots on goal against a South Carolina back line that had allowed only nine all season. The Vols also edged the Gamecocks in corner kicks, 6-4.
Tennessee continues SEC play this week with a road matchup at Ole Miss on Thursday, Sept. 20. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
