KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A nine-match unbeaten start to 2026 for the No. 9 Tennessee soccer team came to a close on Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 defeat to No. 3 Vanderbilt at Regal Soccer Stadium.

Despite falling short in the contest, the Lady Vols (6-1-3, 1-1-2) battled toe-to-toe with one of the nation's best teams, holding the third-ranked Commodores scoreless in the first half for just the third time this season. A trio of impressive attacking plays saw Vanderbilt net three second-half goals, marking the first time Tennessee has conceded more than two goals in a match in 2026.

"Obviously we are disappointed in the result today, we came up short in a couple of moments," head coach Joe Kirt said after the match. "However, a really positive response from our team in terms of putting together a solid 90 minutes of work and competing at a really high level. We need to finish plays, but our team certainly left it out on the field; that is what we asked from them, and they did that against a good Vanderbilt team."

The first half of the match followed a similar script to Thursday night's scoreless draw with Mississippi State as Tennessee was held without a shot. It was just the fourth time since 2001 that the Lady Vols have not registered a shot in a half. Still, the match entered the halftime break scoreless thanks to two first-half saves by Tennessee goalkeeper Cayden Norris.

Vanderbilt wasted little time opening the scoring in the second half, finding the back of the net just 107 seconds after the game resumed to take a 1-0 lead. The deficit provided a shot in the arm to the Tennessee attack, which registered four shots over the next 10 minutes. Ines Derrien nearly found the equalizing goal on an attempt toward the bottom-left corner in the 56^th minute, but a great save by the Vanderbilt goalkeeper denied the Lady Vols.

The Commodores would find the contest's second goal in the 62^nd minute to take a 2-0 lead, as forward Sydney Watts scored her second of the match after dribbling around the goalkeeper.

Despite the setback, Tennessee continued pushing toward the Vanderbilt goal, an effort that finally paid off in the 74^th minute. After an attempt destined for the top corner from Ayva Jordan was denied by the goalkeeper, Derrien turned home the rebound for her third goal of the season to cut the deficit in half. Jordan was credited with her first assist of the season on the play.

The Lady Vols nearly leveled the match in the 75^th minute, as Taylor Cheatham's long-distance effort forced another immaculate save by the Commodore goalkeeper. However, the rally was short lived as Vanderbilt struck in the 78^th minute to put the game to bed with a 3-1 advantage.

Norris recorded a season-high in saves for the second consecutive match, closing with four, while Derrien's team-high six shots fueled the Tennessee offense.

Despite the result, Kirt was positive about the performance by the Lady Vols. "That was probably one of the most consistent performances this year," he said. "We had a good one against Virginia for 90 minutes, but this was probably our next best performance in terms of putting in the work. I think that is what we need to take away from this and carry with us moving into the rest conference play."

Up next, Tennessee will hit the road as SEC play rolls on. The team will head to Auburn, Alabama, to face the Tigers on Thursday, October 1, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. ET on SEC Network.
