Shaw's Hat Trick Guides #12 Vols Past Kentucky 3-1
September 28, 2018 | Soccer
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Tennessee forward Bunny Shaw logged her second-career hat trick as the 12th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers topped the Kentucky Wildcats 3-1 on the road Friday night at the Bell Soccer Complex.
Shaw's opening tally came in the 36th minute, as the striker tapped the ball into an open net from three yards out. MA Vignola was credited with the assist after her shot was deflected towards Shaw by the Kentucky goalkeeper.
Shaw put Tennessee (9-1-1, 3-1 SEC) ahead 2-0 in the 60th minute off a corner kick from redshirt-junior midfielder Katie Cousins. The Spanish Town, Jamaica native then converted a penalty kick in the 74th minute for her third score of the night.
Kentucky (4-9, 0-4 SEC) broke up the shutout in the 86th minute, as Hollie Olding found the the back of the net off of Abby Steiner's cross from the right side.
Shaw joins Lady Vol alumnae Allison Campbell (1998-99) and Melissa Covington (1996-98) as the only players in Tennessee soccer history to record multiple hat tricks. Campbell and Covington each notched hat tricks twice over their respective UT careers.
The Vols outshot Kentucky 19-4 for the match, including a dominant 8-0 disparity over the opening 45 minutes. It was first time Tennessee had held an opponent without a shot in a half since Sept. 30, 2016 against Vanderbilt.
Shaw led all players with eight shots on the night, followed by Jamie Goralski with two. Nine other Vols registered attempts Friday night, including shots on goal from Katie Cousins, Salera Jordan, Rylie O'Keefe and MA Vignola.
The Vols will next travel to Gainesville, Fla. to face preseason SEC favorite Florida on Thursday, Oct. 4. Kickoff between the Vols and Gators is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
