GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The 9th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers earned their fourth-straight SEC victory with a 2-0 triumph over the Florida Gators Thursday night at Donald R. Dizney Stadium. It was the first win for UT in Gainesville since 2006.
Senior forward Danielle Marcano gave the Vols a 1-0 advantage 74 seconds into the match, scoring off a double assist from Erin Gilroy and Meghan Flynn. Gilroy's through ball found Flynn in the left corner, who crossed it into Marcano for a point-blank shot into the back of the net.
Gilroy made it a 2-0 game with her second goal of the season, banging a shot from six yards out past the Florida keeper in the 57th minute. Midfielder Claire Franks was credited with the assist after finding Gilroy in the box past a trio of UF defenders.
Tennessee (10-1-1, 4-1 SEC) posted its ninth shutout of the season behind a season-high tying six saves from senior goalkeeper Shae Yanez. The Downingtown, Pa. native lowered her season goals-against average to a 0.33 while raising her save percentage to a .895, both ranking second in the SEC.
Florida (4-7-2, 2-2-1 SEC) outshot Tennessee 13-10 and held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. The Gators committed 12 fouls on the night, compared to 11 for the Vols.
UP NEXT: Tennessee will return home for another rivalry matchup, hosting No. 19 Vanderbilt on Sunday. Oct. 7. Kickoff between the Vols and Commodores is set for 5 p.m. at Regal Soccer Stadium.
