Tennessee heads to Toledo, Ohio to take part in 14th edition of Inverness Intercollegiate
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee men's golf team will be shooting for its second team title of the season this week at the Inverness Intercollegiate.
The tournament in Toledo, Ohio has a field comprised of 12 teams including Virginia who joins Tennessee in the Golfweek/Sagarin top-25 team rankings.
After winning the Carpet Capital Collegiate in a playoff with Georgia Tech, the Vols are in the top spot in the rankings with a rating of 66.93.
Coach Brennan Webb travels the same five that helped the team win the Carpet Capital, traveling Nolan Ray and Spencer Cross as individual participants.
Sophomore Jake Meenhorst, who was recently named to the Fred Haskins Award Watch List, will take over the top spot in the lineup for Tennessee. The Auckland, New Zealand native helped lead the Vols in Georgia, finishing tied for second while shooting two rounds in the 60s.
This will be the first time Tennessee will partake in the Inverness Intercollegiate which has been hosted by the University of Toledo for 14 years.
Format: The tournament is being played at the Par 71, 7,172 yards at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. This is the 14th year Toledo has hosted the tournament.
The Inverness Club was founded in 1903 serving host to the 2009 NCAA Men's Golf Championships. Inverness will host the 2019 U.S. Junior Amateur and 2021 Solheim Cup and has also hosted four U.S. Opens, two U.S. Senior Opens, two PGA Championships and one U.S. Amateur.
The 54-hole tournament will take place over two days with the first two rounds being played on Monday.
The Vols' Lineup
Jake Meenhorst
The Fred Haskins Watch List member slides into the top spot in the starting five. Meenhorst carded a collegiate-low 66 during his second round of the Carpet Capital.
Rhys Nevin
The Cheshire, England native helped the Vols bring home the Carpet Capital crown, posting a team-low score of 2-under-par in the final round while placing sixth on the individual rankings.
Brayden Garrison
The junior joined Nevin and Meenhorst inside of the top 10 on the leaderboard in Georgia finishing tied for eighth at 3-under for the week.
Tyler Johnson
Johnson bookended his opening tournament as a Vol with rounds that counted for the team. The 2018 C-USA Freshman of the Year carded an opening round of 71 (-1).
Hunter Wolcott
After an opening round 77, Wolcott helped Tennessee bring in their 21-under team score in the final two rounds with a pair of rounds at or below par.Â
Also Competing
Nolan Ray
The redshirt junior from Brentwood, Tenn. competed in two tournaments for the Vols last season including in the lineup in the University of Wyoming Intercollegiate. This is the first tournament action for Ray this season.
Spencer Cross
The Sevierville, Tenn. native saw played for Tennessee in five tournaments in 2017-18 including a top-10 finish at the Jackrabbit in his debut. This is the first tournament action for Cross this season.
