Vols Up 10 Strokes as Play Suspended at Inverness Intercollegiate
September 24, 2018 | Men's Golf
All seven Tennessee players sit inside the top 25 on the individual leaderboard as play stopped in second round
TOLEDO, Ohio. – On the back nine in the second round of the Inverness Intercollegiate, play was suspended due to heavy rains.
At that point, the University of Tennessee men's golf team held a 10 stroke advantage over the 12-team field with every player competing inside of the top 25 on the individual leaderboard.
Junior Hunter Wolcott and redshirt sophomore Tyler Johnson sat squarely in the competition for the individual crown when their rounds were stopped in round two.
Wolcott is tied for second and one off the lead at even par while Johnson is 2-over-par and in a tie for ninth. Both players were key to helping the Vols jump out to an early lead in round one with rounds of 70 and 71, respectively.
Junior Brayden Garrison had the individual lead after round one with a round of 68 (-3). Over the last 13 holes, Garrison had an unblemished scorecard including four birdies. His round helped Tennessee to a four shot edge after 18 holes of play.
Second round play is set to resume tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. with round three play set to begin at the conclusion of round two.
Coach's Take
On playing well despite the rainy conditions:
"We got off to a solid start this morning. Brayden really played a great round of golf to give us that low round we needed with a couple other guys struggling. So far in the 2nd round during some wet and rainy conditions, everyone has been doing a good job of staying patient and not letting the weather get them out of their routines."- Coach Brennan Webb
On having every player inside of the top 25:
"I think that is a continuation of the hard work that everyone has been putting in at home and the guys behind them pushing them. You can see with Spencer and Nolan playing well this afternoon that we are a very deep lineup and that is going to help us throughout the year." – Coach Brennan Webb
Player's Take
On managing his round through tough conditions:
"The golf course is very difficult to score on and so from the opening tee shot I knew the key to today was going to have patience. And so as the round progressed, I continued to stay patient and then when the rain came I was already in a mode where my patience was working for me." - Hunter Wolcott
