Sunday's Guide to the SECs
May 13, 2018 | Track & Field
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Here's a guide of what to watch Sunday in the final session of the SEC Track and Field Championships: you should see all of it.
If you still need some guidance, however, here are some key storylines to follow on the final day at Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium:
SCARVELIS IN SEARCH OF THIRD MEDAL
Women's Discus - 3 p.m.
Junior thrower Stamatia Scarvelis has gone 2-for-2 in podium appearances after two days of the championships. She won the hammer throw Friday and earned bronze for her performance in shot put Saturday night.
Scarvelis concludes the meet with the discus throw, an event in which she ranks third in the conference and 15th nationally (56.41m).
COLLINS, WILLIAMS IN 100M/200M FINALS
Women's 100m - 7:20 p.m.
Men's 100m - 7:30 p.m.
Women's 200m - 8:20 p.m.
Men's 200m - 8:30 p.m.
Senior Shania Collins will contend for two titles Sunday. She is seeded first in the 200m in a wind-aided personal best of 22.40 and second in the 100m with a school-record time of 11.06. The native of Huntington, Maryland, enjoyed a breakthrough performance two weeks ago at Arkansas' National Relay Championship and has kept up her newfound form in her final SECs.
Junior Mustaqeem Williams, who won the SEC Indoor title in the 200m in February, is in the finals of the 100m and 200m as well. His 100m prelim time of 10.21 was a career best, as was his Friday 200m time of 20.47.
In total, eight Tennessee sprinters qualified for 10 final spots Sunday.
DOUBLEDAY FOR Zach Long
Men's 1500m - 6:20 p.m.
Men's 5000m - 8:40 p.m.
Junior Zach Long, a native of nearby Rutledge, Tennessee, will run in a pair of finals Sunday: the 1500m and 5000m. He was caught in a large tumble on the final lap of Saturday's 1500m preliminaries, but he -- and others involved in the crash -- were added to a 20-runner final Sunday after protest.
Long's best event this season has been the 5000m. He broke the school record earlier this season in a time of 13:39.22, which was the top time in the nation at the time.
NO. 2 SEEDS TO STROTHER, DUNCAN
Women's 100m Hurdles - 6:40 p.m.
Men's 400m - 7:10 p.m.
In the women's 100m hurdles, Alexis Duncan has continued a breakout outdoor season. She is seeded second with a career-best, wind-legal time of 12.93.
Senior Nathan Strother, who was the silver medalist in the indoor 400m, is seeking his first title in his final SEC championships. He is the No. 2 seed in the 400m, just off his career-best time in 45.06 seconds. Nathon Allen of Auburn had the top prelim time (44.61).
