Men's Tennis Rally Falls Short to Minnesota, 4-3

AUSTIN, Texas — The Tennessee men's tennis team rallied late but took its first loss of the season 4-3 to Minnesota on Saturday to start the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at Texas Tennis Center.
The Vols (7-1) trailed Minnesota (1-1) by a 3-1 score but turned the tide to tie the match 3-3 on three-set wins by sophomore Scott Jones in his first match of the spring on court 6 and freshman Adam Walton on court 4.
The match came down to court 5, where freshman Nicaise Muamba tied the final set up 4-4 from down a break but lost to Eli Ogilvy 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
Tennessee plays No. 8 Texas in consolation Sunday at 2 p.m. Eastern (1 p.m. Central). The Longhorns lost to Notre Dame 4-3 in a match that also went down to the wire.
Minnesota won the doubles point, which came down to a pair of tiebreakers. The Vols needed both, but the Golden Gophers' Matic Spec and Felix Corwin won 7-6(4) to clinch the point on court 1 over Walton and Preston Touliatos, the Vols' first loss of the year at the top of the lineup.
Junior Timo Stodder, ranked 36th nationally, tied the match 1-1 with a quick 6-4, 6-1 victory of No. 35 Stefan Milicevic at the top of the lineup. It was Stodder's second top-40 win of the spring and his team-leading 19th victory of the season.
Minnesota forged ahead 3-1 with straight-set wins by Felix Corwin on court 2 and Matic Spec on court 3.
The Vols rallied from there. Jones won his match back on the court, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, over Justyn Levin at the No. 6 position. Walton followed with a 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-4 win against Jackson Allen on court 4 to tie the match 3-3 and set the stage for the decider between Muamba and Ogilvy.
The match lasted nearly four hours and was delayed by rain.
