Vols Shut Out The Citadel in Outdoor Doubleheader
January 21, 2018 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee men's tennis team played its first outdoor matches of 2018, defeating The Citadel in a doubleheader Sunday at Barksdale Stadium.
The Vols (7-0) shut out The Citadel (0-7) in both matches 7-0 without dropping a set in singles or doubles.
Redshirt junior Preston Touliatos remained the last Vol unbeaten in dual match play, running his spring record at No. 2 singles to 7-0. He is now 14-2 overall this season after missing last year with shoulder surgery.
Sophomore Luca Wiedenmann, who played No. 5 and 6 singles in the two matches, won 17 consecutive games in singles. He won his first match 6-0, 6-0 against Gavin Stewart and led 5-0 in the first set against Josh Pyritz before conceding a game. He later won the match 6-1, 6-1.
The UT freshman trio of Nicaise Muamba, Adam Walton and Andrew Rogers all won their singles matches. Walton is tied with Touliatos for the second-most singles wins this season with 14.
The Vols went 3-0 this weekend, having also picked up a 4-3 victory over Georgia Tech on Friday. The Yellow Jackets finished last season ranked 19th nationally.
UP NEXT: The Vols hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to Austin, Texas, for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Tennessee plays Minnesota on Saturday at 2 p.m. Eastern (1 p.m. Central) and will play again Sunday against host Texas or Notre Dame. The winner of the two-day event advances to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships next month.
NOTES: With two more wins, Timo Stodder is now a team-leading 18-5 in singles. His personal best for wins in a season is 25 ... Preston Touliatos and Andrew Rogers are now 6-0 at No. 1 doubles and 10-1 overall together.
QUOTES
Head Coach Chris Woodruff:
"We'll give Mother Nature one point today. We had four hours of outdoor tennis in late January in Knoxville, Tennessee, when three days ago, there was snow on the ground with a high of 12. It was just great that we got out there. We looked at Austin and the weather. It's going to be outside. Our guys are going to get outside again tomorrow. It's going to be 65. All of a sudden, we go to Texas having played outdoors for almost a week."
"It was pretty gritty. I like the way we concentrated. I'm not a big scoreboard watcher, but to look up at 6-0, 6-0, that just takes concentration. That's all that is. The opponent might not be as good as you are, but 0 and 0 is tough. Any tennis player will tell you that. That's strictly concentration, and we had three guys in our first match do it. I thought The Citadel played better in the second match. They pushed us a little more. It's all about getting matches out here in this weather and getting under the lights, you couldn't ask for more."
