Live Results Schedule of EventsTennessee returns to the Birmingham CrossPlex for the first time since March 12, 2016, when the UT men finished third and the UT women finished seventh at the 2016 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field National Championships. That meet marked one of the key milestones in the program's recent national resurgence under director of track and field and cross country Beth Alford-Sullivan. That trip featured a slew of standout performances, including Tennessee legends Christian Coleman and Felicia Brown winning the men's and women's 200-meter national championships, respectively.
The Big Orange is coming off a strong showing in last week's Tennessee-Indiana Dual. The UT women took an impressive 74-48 win over the Hoosiers and the men rallied late for a 59-59 tie.
UT enters this Saturday's meet with 24 individuals/entries in the nation's top 16 in a variety of events.
The men's side features 12 national top-16s. Junior Mustaqeem Williams, who opened his 2018 season last week, ranks eighth in the 60 meters (6.70) and owns the nation's top 200-meter time at 20.99. Junior Kwantreyl McConico's 21.11 time in the 200 meters ranks second nationally. In the 400 meters, senior Nathan Strother leads the country with a time of 46.45 and junior Ari Cogdell is seventh at 48.02.
Junior Zach Long (8:11.06) and sophomore Brad Swiney (8:16.88) rank, second and fourth, respectively, in the 3,000 meters. UT's distance runners will not compete in the long distance events at this week's meet.
In the jumps, two UT men rank in the top 16. Sophomore Darryl Sullivan is tied for 15th in high jump after clearing 2.11 meters (6-11.00) at last month's Hoosier Open. Newcomer Ingar Kiplesund is 13th in the long jump after leaping 7.42 meters (24-4.25) last week.
The Vols are also well-represented among the nation's best in the throws. Freshman Jordan West ranks 12th in the shot put with a toss of 18.18 meters (59-7.75). In the weight throw, junior Seth Whitener ranks seventh at 21.12 meters (69-3.50) and junior Matthew Zajac is 10th at 20.52 meters (67-4.00).
Additionally, the Tennessee men's 4x400 squad of Cogdell, Williams, McConico and Strother owns the nation's fifth-fastest time at 3:10.08.
The Tennessee women boast 12 in the nation's top 16. Senior Shania Collins owns the nation's top 200-meter time at 23.45. Junior Maia McCoy is tied for ninth (7.39) in the 60 meters and ranks eighth in the 200 meters (24.27). UT has three top-10 times in the 400 meters with senior Felecia Majors ranking fourth (54.83), junior Lenysse Dyer at ninth (55.72) and sophomore Brooklynn Broadwater at 10th (55.73).
Sophomore Domonique Turner ranks 14th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.40 from last month's Hoosier Open.
Senior Cidae'a Woods stands in seventh place in the long jump with a leap of 6.08 meters (19-11.50). In the triple jump, junior LaChyna Roe's career-best 12.51-meter (41-0.50) leap from last week ranks her fifth nationally.
Junior Stamatia Scarvelis continues to dominate the women's throws events. She leads the nation in the shot put at 17.77 meters (58-3.75) and ranks third in the weight throw with a toss of 21.05 meters (69-0.75).
The UT women's 4x400 of Broadwater, Collins, Dyer and Majors has the nation's fourth-best time at 3:40.75.
Following Saturday's meet, the Big Orange will head to Clemson, South Carolina, for the Bob Pollock Invitational, which runs Jan. 26-27.
