Tennessee Enjoys Strong Showing at UAB Vulcan Invite
January 13, 2018 | Track & Field
UT men and women combined for 11 wins on Saturday at Birmingham CrossPlex
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Tennessee men's and women's track and field teams enjoyed strong showings at Saturday's UAB Vulcan Invite at Birmingham CrossPlex.
The UT men and women combined for 11 wins.
"The team looked great today," Tennessee director of track and field and cross country Beth Alford-Sullivan said. "This is a weekend workday for Tennessee. We obviously had some breakthroughs, another school record for Stamatia Scarvelis, and really a big breakthrough in the weight throw for her. Shania Collins and Maia McCoy were leading the troops and we had a lot of people stepping into the game and getting their moxie back and ready to go. Overall, for the amount of work we got done, that's what we came here to do. We were very pleased. UAB had a great meet, they hosted very well and we were excited to be here."
The Tennessee women swept the sprint events and totaled six wins on the day. Junior Maia McCoy won the 60 meters with a PR time of 7.36 and took third in the 200 meters with a time of 23.89. Senior Shania Collins won the 200 meters with a PR and meet-record time of 23.14, which is also the fastest time in the nation this year. Junior Lenysse Dyer won the 400 meters in 55.02.
Freshman Hannah Jefcoat cleared a PR 3.80 meters to win the pole vault.
Junior Stamatia Scarvelis set a new school record and meet record, winning the weight throw with a throw of 22.27 meters (73-0.75). Scarvelis also won the women's shot put with a throw of 17.03 meters (55-10.50).
On the men's side, the Vols posted five wins.
The Tennessee men's 4x400 "A" team of Kwantreyl McConico, Mustaqeem Williams, Ari Cogdell and Darryl Harris won with a time of 3:14.16.
Junior Seth Whitener won the men's weight throw with a meet-record throw of 21.00 meters (68-10.75)
Newcomer Ingar Kiplesund won the long jump with a leap of 7.36 meters (24-1.75). Freshman Jordan West won the shot put with a toss of 17.67 meters (57-11.75) on his second attempt.
