STARKVILLE, Miss.
The 16th-ranked Lady Volunteers peppered the Bulldogs with 24 shots on goal, three of which found paydirt, as Tennessee rolled over Mississippi State 3-0 at the MSU Soccer Stadium in Starksville, Miss. on Friday night.
"I was very pleased with the results," said Lady Vol Head Coach Angela Kelly. "We had a good rhythm on offense and we executed very well in the attacking third."
In the SEC opener for both teams, UT (4-2-2/1-0-0) carried the action early and dominated the first half, outshooting the Bulldogs 13-3. But MSU freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Dallas kept the Bulldogs in the match, recording three huge saves to keep the game scoreless.
Faced with the possibility of entering halftime tied, Ali Christoph (Columbus, Ohio) corralled a loose ball from around 35-yards out and hammered a lined shot high and into the upper right corner, just out of the reach of a leaping Dallas, giving Tennessee a 1-0 lead at the half.
Redshirt freshman Emily Redberg (Brooklyn Park, Minn) padded the lead at 78:50, finding herself alone one-on-one with backup goalkeeper Emily Myers, who came in to relieve Dallas to start the second half. Redberg took a feed from sophomore Jenny Jeffers (Lake Zurich, Ill.) and blasted a shot to the right of Myers for a 2-0 Lady Vol lead.
With time winding down, the Big Orange stretched the lead to three, as Redberg lofted a pretty pass into the box, and senior midfielder Kayla Lockaby (Hamilton, Ohio) got a foot on the redirection to ice the win for Tennessee.
The Lady Vols outshot MSU 24-8 on the evening, while Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart (Vernon, Conn.) recorded two saves for her fourth shutout of the year.
"MSU was ready to play tonight," said Kelly. "They came to battle and gave us a good match. We are excited to take the win and now we need to get focused on Ole Miss."
UT will return to action on Sunday, traveling to Oxford to play the Mississippi Bulldogs, at 3 p.m. (ET).
