OXFORD, Miss. - Senior Kayla Lockaby and redshirt freshman Emily Redberg each scored goals to lead the 16th ranked Lady Volunteers to a 2-1 victory over the Mississippi Rebels at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium in Oxford, Miss. on Sunday afternoon. Redberg and Lockaby have combined to score seven goals and add two assists over the last three matches, all Lady Vol wins. The win was the 100th in the program's history.
"I'm extremely excited about the win," said Lady Vol Head Coach Angela Kelly. "Scoring a goal early in each half was really key for us today."
UT (5-2-2/2-0-0) came out to play in their SEC match with Ole Miss (5-5-0/1-1-0), scoring the fastest goal in the program's nine-year history, just 10 seconds into the match. Off the initial touch, sophomore midfielder Ali Christoph (Columbus, Ohio) launched a ball into the Rebel zone which senior forward Lyndsey Patterson (Puyallup, Wash.), headed to the speedy feet of Lockaby (Hamilton, Ohio), just outside the box. The senior striker controlled the feed and angled a shot into the upper left corner of the Rebel goal for a 1-0 lead.
For Lockaby it was her team-leading fourth goal of the season, extending her goal-scoring streak to three games. Previously, the quickest goal scored in UT history belonged to Patterson scoring 29 seconds into an Oct. 19, 2001 match versus Florida.
"I have been involved in soccer now for 27 years, and that was the fastest goal I have ever seen," said Kelly. "It was great execution off of the kickoff."
Ole Miss evened the score at 38:30, as sophomore defender Lyndsey Williams headed in a corner kick from junior Hillary Beckman to knot the score at one. The first half was played as evenly as the score suggested, with both teams mounting offensive rallies, and controlling the pitch for large segments at a time. Tennessee had a chance to take a lead into the half with a Christoph shot on the six -ard box but the ball was deflected away from danger. The half ended with Tennessee leading Ole Miss in shots, 8-7, while the two teams each had a single corner kick.
Tennessee capitalized on another strong start in the second half and regained the advantage just 1:45 into play. After skillfully alluding an oncoming defender, Patterson shot a cross into the box and Redberg (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) was the last Lady Volunteer to make contact with the ball, placing a shot into the enemy net for a 2-1 Lady Vol lead. With the goal, Redberg also extended her goal-scoring streak to three.
Redberg had the opportunity to return the favor a few minutes later as she lofted a perfectly weighted pass over the Rebel back line to an onrushing Patterson but Rebel goalkeeper Ann Shelton made a goal-saving dive to keep the ball out of the net. Tennessee continued to push for a third goal but had to settle for the hard-fought 2-1 win.
Junior goalkeeper Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart (Vernon, Conn.) recorded five saves on the afternoon to earn her fifth victory of the season.
"Ole Miss came to battle," said Kelly. "They were threatening all game long. We know every time we face them it will be a great match."
UT will return to action on Friday, Oct.1, traveling to Gainsville, Fla, for a 7:30 p.m. match up with the Florida Gators. The game will be broadcast on SEC TV on Fox Sports Net South, while live stats will be also be made available here at utladyvols.com.
