Tennessee Manages Four Hits in Being Held Without a Run for Third Straight Outing

Tennessee's offensive woes continued in the opener of Thursday afternoon's doubleheader, as St. Mary's hurler Jennifer Eaton limited the Orange to four hits in recording a 1-0 shutout. The setback in Moraga, Calif., marked the third straight 1-0 loss Jim Beitia's club has endured and dropped the squad to 7-11. The only run of the contest came on a two-out error in the bottom of third frame that allowed the Gaels' Jennifer Fawkes to scamper home from third on an infield grounder. SMC (9-4) picked up its fifth consecutive win, as Eaton notched her first career blanking in raising her mark to 5-1.

The defeat offset another stellar effort in the circle by freshman Leigh Ann Ellis (1-3), who gave up four singles and the unearned run. Fawkes led off the third by beating out a bunt and then the left fielder swiped second base. A sacrifice by Janelle Yousef pushed her teammate over to third before Ellis set down Laura Connors on a pop-up. However, Tennessee junior first baseman Maria Torres dropped a relay throw from senior shortstop Annie Fletcher that would have been the final out of the inning.

UT's offense contributed just four hits, including a pair with two out in the seventh stanza. Making her initial plate appearance of the season, junior Nicole Borg poked a pinch-hit single to right and then classmate Hannah Low punched a flare into left field. However, the runners would remain stranded as sophomore Nicole Murray's grounder forced Low at second base to end the game. Lady Vol sophomore Stephanie Humphrey is pitching against St. Mary's Sarah Wiedlin in today's second affair.
