Tennessee Blanked for the Fourth Time in Five Games

The University of the Pacific used the combination of a four-run fourth inning and the dominant pitching of junior Cindy Ball to pin a 5-0 defeat on the Lady Vols in the opener of Sunday's doubleheader in Stockton, Calif. The right-hander allowed only three Tennessee hits and struck out 10 as the Tigers improved to 6-4. Meanwhile, Jim Beitia's squad was held scoreless for the 11th time this season in slipping to 8-12.

Tiger second baseman Natalie Farmer belted a dinger off junior Nicole Borg with one down in the second frame and UOP shortstop Adrienne Ratajczak began the fourth with a shot to left center field to give the hosts a 2-0 lead. Catcher Kelly Lowry followed in that same frame with a single into left before being lifted in favor of sophomore pinch runner Elizabeth Barcklay. Following a sacrifice by freshman Boni Kading that pushed Barcklay over to second, Borg induced a grounder by senior Erica Reynolds for the second out.

A dropped relay throw by Tennessee on sophomore Brandy Thurman's grounder gave Pacific runners on the corners before senior Angele Alves smacked a double to left that drove in both of her teammates. The Tigers tacked on their fifth run when sophomore Estee Okumura's flare just beyond the reach of UT senior shortstop Annie Fletcher enabled Alves to score from second.

The Orange and White managed just a single up the middle by senior catcher Maura Mollet, a fourth-inning base-hit to right by junior Adrianna Wilson, and junior Hannah Low's seventh-inning single in taking the loss. Borg allowed nine hits and fanned two in dropping to 3-4. Freshman Leigh Ann Ellis is pitching game two against Pacific's Jennifer Dacre.
