Preview: #18/20 Vols Carry Momentum into Cabo Collegiate
February 27, 2026 | Men's Golf
The No. 18/20 Tennessee men's golf team is set to begin its second tournament of the spring on Sunday at the Cabo Collegiate.
Â
The 54-hole event will continue through Tuesday with one round being completed each day at Twin Dolphin Golf Club. The par 71 course will be played at 7,156 yards.
Â
The Vols enter the event carrying serious momentum after a strong start to the spring. In the first team event of the new year, Tennessee placed third among 15 teams at the Puerto Rico Classic. The Vols finished behind No. 1 Virginia and, at the time, No. 2 LSU, closing the event with a 36-under-par team score, tied for the fifth best score in program history.
Â
Additionally, three Vols set to compete in Cabo earned top-15 finishes at last weekend's Coach Sykes Individual in North Carolina. Bruce Murphy won the event for the second time in his career, finishing atop a 76-golfer field at 10-under-par. Chase Kyes, who will compete as an individual in Cabo, closed the event as the runner-up at 9-under-par. Luke Smith tied for 15th place in the tournament at 1-under-par.
Â
This week will mark Tennessee's sixth overall and fifth consecutive appearance in the Cabo Collegiate. The Vols matched their highest placement ever in the event in 2025, finishing in fifth place at 9-over-par. Tennessee also finished in fifth at the team's inaugural appearance in 2011.
Â
The 2026 Cabo Collegiate field is strong, consisting of eight top-25 teams, with five in the top 15. No. 7 Arizona State returns to the field after winning the last two editions of the tournament at Twin Dolphin Golf Club.
Â
Tennessee Lineup:
Lance Simpson
The Vols' star senior opened the final spring of his collegiate career in emphatic fashion, tying for fifth place at 14-under-par at the Puerto Rico Classic. Simpson posted three consecutive rounds in the 60s, including a second-round 67, to tie for the fourth-best individual 54-hole score in program history. He enters the Cabo Collegiate ranked tenth in this week's PGA Tour U rankings, having sat in the top ten since the initial rankings release in January.
Â
Josh Hill
Hill also marked a strong start to his senior spring season at the Puerto Rico Classic. The Dubai native posted the lowest single-round score of his career in round two of the event with a 6-under-par 66. Hill concluded the event tied for 23rd place, his fourth top-25 finish in five appearances this season.
Â
Jackson Herrington
Herrington continued an impressive sophomore season at the Puerto Rico Classic, carding three consecutive rounds under par to end the event at 6-under-par and tied for 29th place. His nine rounds of par or better and 70.07 scoring average this season are second on the team, both slightly behind Simpson.
Â
Bruce Murphy
A redshirt junior, Murphy joins the Vols' lineup after competing twice as an individual to open the spring. At the Puerto Rico Classic, he tied for 48th place at 2-under-par, highlighted by a 4-under-par 68 in round one. Last weekend, Murphy claimed the second individual title of his career at the Coach Sykes Individual, finishing atop the weather-shortened 36-hole event at 10-under-par. To add a cherry on top, Murphy's first swing of the event was a hole-in-one.
Â
Luke Smith
Smith opened the spring with his best performance as a Tennessee Volunteer at the Puerto Rico Classic. The freshman posted three consecutive rounds under par for a final tally of 6-under-par, good enough to tie for 29th place. Additionally, Smith tied for 15th place at last weekend's Coach Sykes Individual, closing the event at 1-under-par.
Â
Chase Kyes (i)
A highly touted freshman, Kyes is set to make his second consecutive individual appearance for the Vols. After closing the fall with a 2-under-par finish at the Fallen Oak Collegiate, Kyes topped the performance at last weekend's Coach Sykes Individual, where he was the runner-up at 9-under-par behind rounds of 66 and 67.
