NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee track & field program capped a strong weekend of indoor competition Saturday at the Vanderbilt Invitational with two freshman records, three event crowns and four marks that ranked among the top 10 in school history.
After closing out the winning distance medley relay Friday night, Lady Vol freshman Mary Nyaboke Ogwoka made her first individual appearance on the track following a spectacular cross country season this past fall. The Kenyan international made history in the women's mile, winning the event in 4:41.85 to break the all-time Lady Vol freshman record. Her performance also ranked eighth on Tennessee's all-time list.
In the men's 3,000-meter, three Vols clocked sub-eight-minute performances with marks that cracked the program's top-10 list. Sophomore Ethan Edgeworth led the way with a time of 7:52.17, making him the third-fastest Vol in the event all-time, followed by sophomore Zouhair Redouane (7:55.27) and freshman Nelson Mapi Setek (7:55.37), whose times ranked fifth and sixth in Tennessee history. Setek's showing also broke the UT freshman record of 8:08.18, previously held by Mike Griffin.
The Lady Vol distance crew picked up its second win of the afternoon when Andie-Marie Jones and Nia Clatworthy finished 1-2 in the 3,000-meter. Jones finished first in a personal-best 9:21.31, while Clatworthy was close behind with a PR of 9:21.81.
Junior jumper Grant Campbell got Saturday's action started with a victory in the men's high jump, clearing 2.08 meters (6-9.75) on his first attempt at the bar. The mark earned him his ninth career event win.
