May 03, 2024 | Soccer
After a tremendous 2023-24 campaign, former Lady Vol and current Manchester City star Bunny Shaw has been named FWA Women's Footballer of the Year, the organization announced Friday.
Shaw was amid a record-breaking year before suffering a leg injury with just two games remaining. In 18 matches, the sensational striker found the back of the net 21 times, one shy of tying the Women's Super League record for goals in a season. She currently holds an eight-goal lead over the rest of the league and is on track to win the prestigious Golden Boot award.
In March, Shaw became Manchester City's all-time leading scorer as she tallied her 67th goal with the club during a victory over rival Manchester United. She currently boasts 72 career goals with Manchester City, representing a clip of 0.85 goals per match.
She also has placed her name in the club's record book in hat tricks, collecting eight during her already illustrious career with Manchester City. In December, Shaw became the first player in WSL history to score three hat tricks in a calendar year.
Although the award has only been presented to females since the 2017-18 season, Shaw became the first women's footballer to win the award who competed collegiately in the United States. She collected 53 percent of all votes cast for the award, marking the most for the women's award in the FWA's history.
The Jamaican left her mark on Rocky Top during her two seasons with the Lady Vols. She was named the 2018 SEC Offensive Player of the Year and earned second-team All-America honors during her senior season. The two-time All-SEC selection sits in the top three in the Tennessee record book for points and goals in a single season, while boasting the school record for game-winning goals after scoring seven during both her junior and senior campaigns.
