#7 Vols Advance to NCAA Second Round with 4-0 Sweep over ETSU

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The seventh-seeded Tennessee men's tennis team posted a dominant sweep over ETSU, 4-0, in the Round of 64 of the NCAA Tournament Friday afternoon at Barksdale Stadium.
The Vols (23-6) were quick to win the doubles point over the Bucs (13-10), thanks to a 6-3 effort from sixth-ranked Johannus Monday and Angel Diaz over Milledge Cossu and Francisco Lamas atop the lineup. Filip Apltauer and James Newton recorded a 6-3 victory over Pedro Cressoni and Alberto Garcia on court three to give UT a one-point advantage heading into singles.
Filip Pieczonka dominated Peter Kalocsai in 6-0, 6-1 fashion at the No. 3 spot, posting his 15th dual match win of the season. Shunsuke Mitsui, ranked 37th in singles, routed Cossu, 6-2, 6-3, recording his 20th career win at the No. 2 position. Apltauer served out a second-set bagel to clinch the match, 6-4, 6-0, which marked his 15th dual match victory of 2024.
HISTORICALLY BEATING THE BUCS
UT recorded its 40th win over ETSU in program history and now holds a 43-3 record against the Bucs.
VOLS IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
With their 4-0 sweep in the opening round, the Vols now hold a 55-30 program record in the NCAA Tournament and boast a 21-3 mark in the Round of 64.
JO AND ANGEL AT NO. 1
The sixth-ranked duo of Monday and Diaz hold an 18-5 record as a pair in 2023-24 and are 16-5 atop UT's lineup. Tennessee is 12-2 when the two win in doubles action.
