#7 Vols Sweep Memphis, 4-0, Advance to Fifth Straight Super Regional

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The seventh-seeded Tennessee men's tennis team advanced to its fifth consecutive Super Regional after sweeping No. 31 Memphis, 4-0, in the Round of 32 of the NCAA Tournament Saturday afternoon at Barksdale Stadium.
The Vols (24-6) won their 25th doubles point of the season in a battle against the Tigers (19-7). James Newton and Filip Apltauer defeated Pau Fanlo and Juan Zabala, 7-5, on court three. The sixth-ranked duo of Johannus Monday and Angel Diaz cranked out a gritty 7-6 (9-7) tiebreaker win against Pablo Alemany and Charlie Barry, ranked 29th as a pair, at the No. 1 spot. Shunsuke Mitsui and Filip Pieczonka, ranked 77th in doubles, were dueling in a tiebreaker at 6-all on court two before going unfinished.
Diaz secured the first singles win in a decisive 6-2, 6-2 effort over Harry Rock on court four to put Tennessee up by two points. Top-ranked Johannus Monday overcame his first set tiebreaker against No. 58 Pablo Alemany, 7-4, at 6-all, and cruised to a 6-2 second-set victory to give UT a 3-0 lead. No. 37 Mitsui fought to pull out a three-setter over Conor Gannon, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot to clinch the Big Orange sweep.

With their 4-0 sweep in the second round, the Vols now hold a 56-30 program record in the NCAA Tournament and are advancing to the Super Regional for the 15th time in team history, boasting a 15-6 program mark in the Round of 32.
JO AND ANGEL AT NO. 1
The sixth-ranked duo of Monday and Diaz hold a 19-5 record as a pair in 2023-24 and are 17-5 atop UT's lineup. The two boast an impressive 11-2 mark against ranked opponents this season. Additionally, Tennessee is 13-2 when the two win in doubles action.
TENNESSEE AGAINST IN-STATE RIVALS
UT went undefeated against opponents residing in the state of Tennessee in 2024, beating Tennessee Tech, Vanderbilt, ETSU and Memphis, sweeping three out of the four teams.
