Nugent Stars in Debut, #2 Tennessee Opens Season with 15-0 Win
February 08, 2024 | Softball
ARLINGTON, Texas – Junior catcher Sophia Nugent knocked in four RBIs Thursday afternoon at Allen Saxe Field as the second-ranked Lady Vols earned a season-opening 15-0 run-rule win over UT-Arlington.
Nugent made her Tennessee debut behind the dish and went 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the first and a three-run home run in the second. Nugent paired with graduate pitcher Payton Gottshall to make up the Lady Vols' opening-day battery.
Gottshall tossed four scoreless innings and held UTA to a pair of hits. The righty struck out seven and walked none as she picked up win No. 1 on the year.
Sophomore Charli Orsini came on in relief and threw the game's final frame to complete the shutout. The Kellyville, New South Wales, Australia, native struck out a pair.
Tennessee (1-0) cranked up the offense in the second as it scored five runs on three hits. Graduate Kiki Milloy scored one on a double down the right-field line before junior McKenna Gibson pushed a run home on a grounder to short.
Nugent's three-run homer capped UT's offensive output in the frame.
The Lady Vols added three runs in the third, beginning with a Milloy RBI single to center – her second RBI of the day. Senior Rylie West belted a two-run homer to clear the bases to extend UT's lead to 9-0.
Tennessee pushed across six runs in the fifth as Camryn Sarvis singled home Giulia Koutsoyanopulos, followed by an Alannah Leach two-RBI double – the double marked her first career hit. An error and a bases-loaded walk brought home two more runs before Koutsoyanopulos came back around and drove in UT's 15th run on a grounder to second.
UT-Arlington (0-1) picked up just four hits on the day, with two coming in the game's final half-inning. Jessica Adams got the start for the Mavericks in the circle, tossing 1.2 innings. She suffered the loss, allowing four runs on five hits.
Gracie Bumpurs and Abi Gutierrez also threw 1.2 innings for UTA. Bumpurs allowed three runs on three hits, while Gutierrez surrendered eight runs on seven hits.
