Tennessee Comes Up Short to #12/24 Virginia Tech in First Round of NCAA Tournament, 2-1

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Tennessee comes up short in its NCAA Tournament First Round match, losing 2-1 to No. 12/24 Virginia Tech.
UT (9-7-4) concluded its 2024 campaign having posted eight clean sheets on the season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive season.
Junior Kennedy Price was the goal-scorer for the Lady Vols with Sammi Woods and Mac Midgley earning the assists. Freshman Cayden Norris played the full 90 minutes in goal, making a career-high six saves.
Anna Weir and Natalie Mitchell found the net for the Hokies.
Virginia Tech's first goal of the game came in the second minute when Samantha DeGuzman found Weir.
Tennessee quickly responded in the fifth minute when Midgley found Woods down field who delivered it in to Price for the tap in goal.
After quick scores from each team, the rest of the first half was a defensive battle as the Hokies were only able to create one more chance before the break.
In the 51st minute, Mitchell found the goal for the Hokies to put them back ahead.
Freshman Reese Mattern created a chance for the Lady Vols in the 70th minute but Virginia Tech's Lauren Hargrove made the save.
