Abdalla Leads No. 16 Vols to Victory at Furman Invitational

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Yaseen Abdalla picked up his first individual win of 2023 as he led the 16th-ranked Vols to victory Saturday morning at the Furman Invitational.
The Vols won the meet with 23 points – capturing their second consecutive team victory. UT's top five runners all finished among the top 10. It is the first time since 2005 that the Vols have won back-to-back meets.
For the women, Ashley Jones made her Tennessee debut and guided the Lady Vols to a second-place team finish with 42 points.
WOMEN'S RACE RECAP
Jones was the first Lady Vol across the finish line Saturday at 20:47.65. She was followed by Jessie Secor (21:00.11), Rachel Sutliff (21:07.50), Andie-Marie Jones (21:30.61) and Callie Tucker (21:47.69). Ashley Jones placed second overall, while Secor was eighth, Sutliff ninth and Andie-Marie Jones placed 10th. Tucker rounded out the group with a 14th-place finish.
MEN'S RACE RECAP
The men dominated the meet, led by Abdalla's individual win in 17:55.66. Gabriel Sanchez placed fifth overall at 18:10.40 and was followed across the line by a host of Volunteers. Jacob Nenow finished sixth (18:13.36), Brandon Olden was seventh (18:16.73) and Jacob Lewis closed out the top five runners with an eighth-place finish at 18:21.92.

Tennessee enters an extended training cycle with the next race weekend coming on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 13-14 with the squads splitting up between the Crimson Classic hosted by Alabama and Pre-Nationals hosted by Virginia.
