April 01, 2023 | Softball
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The third-ranked Tennessee softball team rallied late on Saturday at the Davis Diamond but ultimately fell short, 3-1, to Texas A&M.
Tennessee (28-3, 9-2 SEC) was silenced at the plate as the Aggies' starter Madison Preston tossed six innings with eight strikeouts, two walks and allowed just one run on two hits. The senior righty got the win and is now 4-1 on the year.
Texas A&M (22-12, 5-6 SEC) scattered five hits on the day and pushed three runs across the plate – scoring in the first, third and sixth innings. Karlyn Pickens took the ball for the Lady Vols and surrendered two unearned runs over three innings of work. The freshman struck out four, walked one and gave up a pair of hits – she suffered the loss and is 6-3 this season.
Nicola Simpson came on in relief of Pickens, throwing two shutout innings before giving way to freshman Charli Orsini. She worked one inning and allowed one run on one hit.
For the Aggies, Emily Leavitt came out of the bullpen to pitch the final inning and picked up her third save of 2023.
Julia Cottrill put Texas A&M on the board in the first with a single to right followed by a stolen base. She then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored as an errant throw to third sailed into left field.
In the third, Amari Harper reached on an error and then stole second to move into scoring position. She was brought home by Keely Williams who hit a triple to center field – giving the Aggies a 2-0 lead.
With two outs in the sixth and a runner on third, Texas A&M added an insurance run as Koko Wooley singled through the middle of the infield to plate Rylen Wiggins.
Down to its final three outs, Tennessee drew a pair of walks while Giulia Koutsoyanopulos got hit to load the bases with nobody out. Freshman Jamison Brockenbrough then reached on a fielder's choice to score pinch runner Brylee Mesusan.
UT then loaded the bases again as Rylie West got hit but was unable to extend the rally as Leavitt got a strikeout and ground out to end the game.
