CHICAGO – The No. 11 Tennessee men's tennis team lost its first-round match at the ITA National Indoor Championship Friday, narrowly falling to fifth-ranked Virginia 4-3 at the XS Tennis Village.

Tennessee (6-4) won the doubles point behind wins on courts two and three. A 6-3 effort from #34 Emile Hudd and Shunsuke Mitsui on court two saw the Tennessee duo win 6-3 over Virginia's Inaki Montes and Mans Dahlberg. Soon after, the Big Orange doubles clinch came on court three as Tennessee's Blaise Bicknell and Angel Diaz teamed up to defeat Alexander Kiefer and Jeffrey von der Schulenburg, 6-4.

Virginia (8-2) won five first sets in singles play, taking a 3-1 lead after wins on courts two, three and five. Diaz earned a straight-set, 7-5, 6-2 victory on court six to cut the UT deficit to 3-2. On court one, #18 Johannus Monday won a three-setter against #70 Montes, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Monday held on a deuce point to go up 4-2 in the third and his next break set him up to polish off the win at the top of Tennessee's singles lineup.

Moments later, Virginia's Goetz battled past #116 Hudd in a third set, clinching the match for the Cavaliers with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 court-four win. Hudd took a 6-1 second set in dominating fashion, before dropping the final set.

Tennessee is back in action Saturday at 4:30 p.m. ET against No. 17 Stanford in its first consolation match of the ITA National Indoor Championship.
