Walton Advances to NCAA Singles Quarterfinals
May 25, 2022 | Men's Tennis
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Following a third consecutive straight-set win in the NCAA Singles Championship, Tennessee men's tennis graduate student Adam Walton advanced to the Round of 8 for the first time in his career Wednesday in Champaign.
Â
Third-ranked Walton, an ITA Singles All-American for a second straight year, faced Harvard's 38th-ranked Henry von der Schulenburg in Wednesday's Round of 16 match and emerged with a 7-6(1), 6-3 victory.
Â
"We had tricky conditions today," Walton said. "The wind was strong up one end. I felt like both of us were struggling up the end in the wind, so I knew it was going to turn into a mental battle. I'm happy with the way I conducted myself and navigated through that match because it wasn't easy."
Â
The outdoor match, which featured gusty 20 mph winds, began with von der Schulenburg breaking Walton in the first game of the opening set, before Walton broke back to even it at 2-2. Tied at 3-3 in the first set, von der Schulenburg earned a break on deuce point but responded well in the windy conditions to break back once again at 4-4.
Â
Walton would go down a break at 5-6, but broke von der Schulenburg to send the first set to a tiebreaker at 6-all. Walton jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in the tiebreak and used a forehand passing shot to go up 5-1, before eventually taking the tiebreak in 7-1 fashion.
Â
In the second set, Walton earned a break to go up 2-1 and later broke von der Schulenburg once more for a 4-1 lead. Walton then went on to serve two consecutive aces to hold at 5-3 and earned one final break to take the match.
Â
Wednesday evening saw the Tennessee Aussie duo of Walton and Pat Harper drop their Round of 16 Doubles match, 4-6, 2-6 to Ohio State's #2 Matej Vocel and Robert Cash.
UP NEXT
Walton will face Gabriel Diallo (Kentucky) Thursday in the NCAA Singles Round of 8. Diallo defeated Ohio State's No. 9-16 Matej Vocel Wednesday, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
