#2 Vols Roll to 4-0 Win Over Texas A&M at ITA Indoor National Championships
February 18, 2022 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – The No. 2 Tennessee men's tennis team rolled past 12th-ranked Texas A&M Friday afternoon in the opening round of the ITA Indoor National Championships, sweeping the Aggies 4-0.

Freshman #114 Shunsuke Mitsui earned his third clinch of the season, defeating #105 Guido Marson in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0 to send the Vols to the quarterfinals in Seattle.

The Vols (9-1) won the doubles point for the sixth time this season, as Emile Hudd and Mitsui clinched on court one with a 7-5 victory over Texas A&M's 33rd-ranked pairing of Noah Schachter and Austin Abbrat. The UT duo was down a break at 2-4, before winning five of the next six games. Prior to that, Johannus Monday and Mark Wallner defeated Raphael Perot and Giulio Perego, 6-4, after getting a big break to take a 5-4 lead.

The Aggies (6-1) were trounced in quick fashion by the Vols on the singles courts. #10 Monday extended Tennessee's early advantage to 2-0, with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over the Aggies' Pierce Rollins on court two. Monday took the opening set in just over 20 minutes, before seizing the straight-sets victory.

Next up to finish in singles was #10 Adam Walton, who used early breaks in each of his two sets to capture momentum and secure a dominant, 6-2, 6-0 victory.

Mitsui's singles win over the Aggies' #105 Guido Marson marked Tennessee's third straight-sets singles victory of the afternoon. The singles matches of #100 Hudd, #122 Angel Diaz and Harper each went unfinished.
LIFE IN THE WIN COLUMN
The win marks the first non-consolation match win for the Vols at the ITA Indoor National Championships since 2011 and the parallels between Friday's match and that 2011 win. In 2011, third-seeded Tennessee defeated an SEC foe in Georgia, 4-2 on Feb. 18 in Seattle at ITA Indoors. Friday, third-seeded Tennessee defeated an SEC foe in Texas A&M, also on Feb. 18 in Seattle.

MOVING ON UP
By defeating Noah Schachter in singles Friday, Adam Walton claimed sole possession of ninth place on Tennessee's all-time singles win list with 107, surpassing the 106 of Tennessee great Mikelis Libietis.

UP NEXT
Third-seeded Tennessee will face 11th-seeded South Carolina Saturday at 3 p.m. ET at the Seattle Tennis Center. The winner of that match will advance to the semifinals of the ITA Indoor National Championships.
