Top-Ranked Doubles Pair Highlights Five Vols in ITA Preseason Rankings
September 07, 2021 | Men's Tennis
TEMPE, Ariz. – Five members of the Tennessee men's tennis team appeared in the preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, the organization announced Tuesday.
The Vols claim the nation's top doubles pair, with the reigning doubles national championship duo of Adam Walton and Pat Harper receiving that recognition. The Aussie tandem held an overall doubles record of 31-7 together last season and rattled off 12 consecutive victories to end the campaign.
Two Tennessee players garnered top-six singles status nationally, with Walton landing at No. 5 and sophomore Johannus Monday being ranked No. 6.
At 98-37, Walton is just two singles wins away from the 100th of his Tennessee career after being named an ITA Singles All-American in 2021.
Monday compiled an overall singles record of 32-9 as a freshman in 2020-21, including a 23-6 dual match record. He held a record of 14-5 against ranked singles opponents, winning each of his three singles matches versus top-10 competition. He capped his debut campaign earning All-America distinction and National Rookie of the Year honors from the ITA.
Martim Prata obtained a top-30 position in the ITA singles rankings, at No. 29, while Harper (No. 84) and incoming senior Emile Hudd (No. 95) also found themselves in the top-100 for singles.
Three of Tennessee's doubles pairs are represented inside the top-50, with Monday and Prata landing at No. 33 and newcomers Hudd and Shunsuke Mitsui receiving a doubles rank of No. 48.
Mitsui, a freshman from Shizuoka, Japan, earned a spot in the ITA's Newcomer top-10, at No. 9 nationally.
Tennessee's fall season begins this week, with the Knoxville Showdown set to run Sept. 10-12.
