May 15, 2021 | Men's Tennis
ORLANDO, Fla. – The No. 3 Tennessee men's tennis team returns to its run to an NCAA Team title with a Round of 16 Super Regional tilt with No. 18 Arizona on Monday morning at the USTA National Campus. First serve from Lake Nona is slated for 10 a.m. ET.
Fans can follow Monday's contest through the USTA's live stat feed which can be found HERE, or they can watch a fully produced broadcast through the Tennis One App which can be downloaded HERE. Sam Gore will be heard describing the morning's action.
Attendance throughout the remainder of both the NCAA Team and Individual Championships will be permitted and limited tickets are available HERE.
LAST TIME OUT
Last time out, the Vols advanced to Orlando with a comprehensive, 4-0, victory over No. 38 Memphis in the tournament's second round.
After surviving a few early breaks during doubles play, the Vols earned a sweeping tiebreak victory on court two from the tandem of freshman Johannus Monday and junior Martim Prata and a come-from-behind, 7-5, triumph from graduate student Giles Hussey and senior Mark Wallner on court three to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
In singles action, the Orange & White garnered three straight-set victories in quick succession from graduate student Luca Wiedenmann, senior Adam Walton and senior Andrew Rogers to conclude a perfect NCAA opening weekend in Knoxville.
SCOUTING ARIZONA
This will be the Vols second-ever meeting with Arizona, with the lone meeting between the squads occurring in 1973 in what was an 8-1 victory in favor of the Wildcats.
Monday's match will be Arizona's first-ever round of 16 match as the squad advanced this far following a tight, 4-2, victory over Kentucky last Saturday afternoon in Lexington.
Arizona is led at the top of its lineup by freshman Gustaf Strom who has already established himself as one of the top freshmen in America.
Elsewhere in the rankings, Arizona is featured by junior, Jonas Ziverts who is likely to play at the No. 2 position right behind Strom.
A WIN WOULD…
A win would push the Vols to the quarterfinal round for the first time since 2013 and for the 10th time in program history.
It would also be the first time UT has advanced to the NCAA Championship Site under the current tournament format that adopted the Super Regional round for the first time in 2019.
A victory on Monday would also give the Orange & White 27 dual victories, its most since advancing to the NCAA Championship match in 2010.
DOUBLES CONTINUES TO BE THE DIFFERENCE
In postseason play, the Vols are a perfect 5-of-5 in doubles points and in the four tournaments they've played in so far this season (ITA Kickoff Weekend, ITA Indoor National Championships, SEC Tournament, NCAA Tournament), they are 8-of-10 in the doubles point and hold a 9-1 overall record in those 10 matches.
In 29 matches this season the Vols have won the doubles point 24 times and hold a near perfect record of 23-1 when claiming the doubles point.
WALTS BECOMING CLUTCH IN POSTSEASON PLAY
In all five of the Vols postseason tilts, senior Adam Walton has been an integral part of each victory. At the SEC Tournament, Walton and doubles partner Pat Harper helped UT clinch the all-important doubles point against both South Carolina and Florida. In the Orange & White's contest to open the SEC Tournament against Ole Miss, Walton clinched match point at 4-1, with a three-set come-from-behind victory at the No. 1 position.
In the opening two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, Walton has posted a point in singles play against both Alabama A&M and Memphis, while him and Harper clinched the doubles point in UT's, 5-0, demolition of Alabama A&M in the tournament's opening round.
UP NEXT
Following a victory on Monday, the Vols will take on the winner of No. 6 North Carolina and No. 11 Georgia—which will also take place on Monday morning at 10 a.m. ET—on Thursday in the quarterfinal round. First serve for that potential match is still to be determined from the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
