Third-Ranked Vols Roll Past South Carolina, 4-1

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Two dominant wins in doubles, a pair of straight-set victories in singles, capped off by freshman Johannus Monday's eighth victory over a ranked opponent, pushed the third-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team past No. 16 South Carolina, 4-1, on Friday at the Carolina Tennis Center.
The win was UT's (15-1, 4-0 SEC) third straight victory over South Carolina (7-4, 3-2 SEC). and its 13th in the last 15 meetings between the programs.
The Vols came out quickly in doubles play as the Australian tandem of senior Adam Walton and junior Pat Harper gave UT the opening doubles set with a dominant 6-1 victory over South Carolina's Daniel Rodrigues and Connor Thomson on court one.
On court three, the duo of graduate student Giles Hussey and senior Mark Wallner clinched the doubles point and improved to 4-0 in SEC play, taking down Toby Samuel and Jake Beasley, 6-2, to give UT a 1-0 lead.
In singles play, graduate student Luca Wiedenmann fell behind 5-2 in his opening set against Beasley and recovered to earn wins in 11 of the next 12 played games to earn a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 5 that doubled the Tennessee advantage.
On court one, Walton rolled past No. 32 Daniel Rodrigues in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to put the Vols on the brink of clinching match point.
After junior Martim Prata fell in a difficult, 6-2, 7-6(0) decision at No. 3, Monday—the six-time reigning SEC Freshman of the Week—battled past No. 81 Raphael Lambling, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to clinch match point at 4-1, giving the Orange & White their seventh straight victory.
LUCA JUST CAN'T LOSE
Graduate student Luca Wiedenmann's win on Friday was his 23rd consecutive singles victory and the 106th of his career, placing him in a tie for ninth on Tennessee's all-time singles wins list with VFL Mikelis Libietis.
DOUBLES CONTINUES TO BE TROUBLE
Friday's victory marked Tennessee's 33rd straight win when claiming the doubles point—a streak nearing its second birthday that dates to March 31, 2019.
