No. 10 Vols Fall in ITA Quarters to No. 2 UNC, 4-1
February 12, 2021 | Men's Tennis
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – A heartbreaking loss of the doubles point and three losses in straight-sets in singles did the No. 10 Tennessee men's tennis team in, in a 4-1 loss to second-ranked North Carolina on Friday at the Atkins Tennis Center.
This was the Vols (8-1) first loss of the season, while UNC (4-0) advanced to the ITA Indoor semifinals for the fifth time in six years.
The doubles point was a hard-fought battle as the duo of graduate student Giles Hussey and senior Mark Wallner breezed past Benjamin Sigouin and Rinky Hijikata, 6-3 for their fourth consecutive win as a pair at the No. 3 position.
Carolina evened the doubles point at a set apiece with a win on court one.
At No. 2, despite numerous opportunities at match point, the Tennessee tandem of junior Martim Prata and freshman Johannus Monday fell in a tiebreak, 7-6(5), to the fifth-ranked pairing of Mac Kiger and Simon Soendergaard as the Tar Heels took the early 1-0 advantage.
In singles, Monday quickly evened things up at 1-1 as he breezed past No. 55 Hijikata, 6-4, 6-2, to improve his dual match singles record to 8-1.
Following Monday, Carolina grabbed victories on courts six, four and three to clinch match point at 4-1.
When the match was clinched, senior Adam Walton was on the brink of getting a second point on the board for the Vols as he led No. 2 William Blumberg, 6-0, 1-6, 4-2 and graduate student Luca Wiedenmann had just evened his match up at a set apiece.
UP NEXT
Following Friday mornings results, the Vols will return to the Atkins Tennis Center for a Saturday morning contest with the third-ranked TCU Horned Frogs. First serve is slated for 10 a.m. ET.
