February 13, 2021 | Men's Tennis
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Graduate student Luca Wiedenmann became the 10th-ever Vol to capture 100 singles victories and classmate Giles Hussey won a clutch match to clinch match point as the 10th-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team downed No. 3 TCU, 4-3, on Saturday at the Atkins Tennis Center.
The win was the Vols (9-1) first over a top-5 opponent this season and sixth over TCU (6-2) all-time in a series dating to 1983.
In doubles, Tennessee got the early jump on the Horned Frogs as the duo of freshman Johannus Monday and junior Martim Prata battled past the 24th-ranked tandem of Sander Jong and Tadeas Paroulek, 6-4, on court two.
TCU quickly knotted doubles up at a set apiece as Bertus Kruger and Jake Fearnley took down Hussey and senior Mark Wallner, 6-4, at No. 3.
On court one, the Australian team of senior Adam Walton and junior Pat Harper broke the serve of Luc Fomba and Alastair Gray with the match tied at 5-5, before holding serve to earn a 7-5 victory and give the Vols a 1-0 lead.
TCU almost immediately knotted the score at 1-1 as Prata fell to Jong, 6-1, 6-2 on court three.
At No. 6, Harper regained the Volunteer advantage. After battling through an opening-set tiebreak, the Brisbane, Australia native dominated the second frame to earn a 7-6(10), 6-3 victory for his third win of the spring.
Following Harper, Wiedenmann earned his historic 100th career singles win to double the UT advantage at the No. 5 position. Wiedenmann rolled past Juan Martin, 6-3, 6-2, capturing his 17th consecutive singles win this season.
Within minutes, TCU tied things back up at 3-3 with hard-fought wins on courts one and two.
With both sides on the brink of clinching, Hussey activated his clutch gene after sweeping the tiebreak in the opening set. Even at 3-3 in the second, Hussey held serve, won a massive service break and blistered four consecutive serves past No. 125 Tomas Jirousek, clinching the match at 4-3.
