Cross Country Preview: NCAA South Region Championships

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Postseason racing continues for the Tennessee cross country program as the Vols and Lady Vols take on the NCAA South Region Championships Friday morning at the John Hunt Cross Country Course in Huntsville, Alabama.
The women's 8k will kick things off at 9:30 a.m. ET followed by the men's 10k at 10:30 a.m.
The regional meet features Division I teams from Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Mississippi, with the top two men's and women's programs earning automatic berths to the NCAA National Championships next week in Tallahassee, Florida. Individual spots at the national meet are also up for grabs for the top-four individual finishers not selected as members of NCAA-qualifying teams.

WHO'S RACING
The Vols will field a squad of 10 for the regional championships, while the Lady Vols roster features nine competitors.
Women's 6k – 9:30 a.m.
Men's 10k – 10:30 a.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The Vols and Lady Vols both finished fifth at the 2021 SEC Cross Country Championships, placing three runners on All-SEC teams. Sydney Seymour finished ninth at SECs to earn second team honors, while Rachel Sutliff picked up All-Freshman team accolades as the seventh freshman across the line.
For the men, Karl Thiessen finished 14th and became the first Vol since Peter Okwera in 2012 and 2013 to earn back-to-back All-SEC honors.
REGIONAL REWIND
This will be the first regional for the Vols and Lady Vols since 2019 due to the cancelation of the 2020 regional. In 2019, the Lady Vols finished third in the South Regional – their best finish since 2009. Seymour and Katie Thronson were both a part of the team that season and finished 13th and 17th, respectively, in 2019.
The men's squad placed 12th in 2019 and featured Alex Crigger, Conner Hawkins and Thiessen who all return for the Orange & White in 2021.
Crigger, Seymour and Thronson earned All-Region honors for their performances in 2019.
UP NEXT
UT will look to extend its postseason run as the NCAA National Championships field will be announced at 5 p.m. ET on NCAA.com. The national meet is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 20 at the Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida.
