Prata, Monday Sweep First Set of SEC Weekly Honors
January 28, 2021 | Men's Tennis
It was a clean sweep of weekly honors for the Tennessee men's tennis team as junior Martim Prata was named the SEC Player of the Week and freshman Johannus Monday garnered the SEC's Freshman of the Week honor, the conference announced Thursday.
The weekly honors are the first for both Monday and Prata as the Vols have rolled to five consecutive dual match wins to begin the Spring and have advanced to the ITA Indoor National Championships for the first time since 2014.
Prata is currently 5-0 in both singles and doubles to open the year without yielding a single set.
His biggest win thus far came in the Vols most recent contest with NC State, when the Lisbon, Portugal native knocked off No. 95 Tadas Babelis, 7-5, 7-6(3) to clinch match point at 4-1 and send UT to the ITA Indoor National Championships.
In doubles, Prata and Monday have been partners for the duration of the Spring season, winning all five of their dual matchups and dropping just 13 total games across five sets played. The duo has helped the Orange & White claim the doubles point in four of five dual matches, playing primarily at the No. 1 or No. 2 positions.
Monday has also been really consistent in singles play, winning four of his five matches and holding a 13-3 overall singles record in his first stanza on Rocky Top.
The Hull, England native, like Prata has a win over a ranked opponent in singles play after taking down 69th-ranked Mason Beiler 6-2, 6-2 to help UT take down the now 23rd-ranked Oklahoma Sooners, 5-2, to open dual play.
Tennessee returns to action on Friday afternoon when it welcomes Notre Dame to Knoxville. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. ET from the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
