Lady Vols in Eighth After Two Rounds at Westbrook Invitational
February 23, 2020 | Women's Golf
PEORIA, Ariz. — After two rounds of play at the Westbrook Invitational, Tennessee's women's golf team sits in eighth out of 16 teams. The squad shot a 284 in the first round, followed by a 288 in the second to total for 572 (-4) on the day. The third and final round begins tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. ET.
"We played much better today than we scored," head coach Judi Pavon said. "We had a lot of birdies and many other birdie opportunities. We gave too many shots away again on some of the easy holes and that is the difference in being closer to the top of the leaderboard."
The best performance came from sophomore Hadley Walts, who carded a career-best round of 70 (-2) strokes with two birdies in the first. During the second round, Walts shot a 71 (-1) and recorded three more birdies to total for 141 (-3), tying for 17th overall.
"Hadley has been playing with a lot of confidence and is not making many mistakes out there, which is great to see," Pavon said. "I would like to see her have one more good round tomorrow."
Junior Waverly Whiston had the next best performance, as she shot an even par 72 in the opening round and carded two birdies. During the second, she shot 71 (-1) strokes with another birdie for a total of 143 (-1) to tie for 27th. Including the two rounds, the junior has now shot an even par or better five times this season.
Right behind her were freshman Nicole Whiston and senior Micheala Williams, both tying for 34th overall with a total of 144 (E) strokes in the opening two rounds.
Nicole Whiston shot a 71 in the first round that featured four birdies, which was the 12th time this season she has shot an even par or better. In the next round, she carded 73 (+1) strokes with three more birdies.
Williams carded an even par 72 in the opening round, marking the seventh par or better round this season. She followed that up in the second with three birdies and 73 (+1) strokes.
Rounding out the lineup was sophomore Mikayla Bardwell, who shot 74 strokes during the first round. In the second, she carded a 76 for a total of 150 (+6), tying for 70th.
Individually, sophomore Malia Stovall is tied for 12th overall with a total of 140 (-4) strokes. She started off the tournament with an even par of 72 and shot a career-best of 68 (-4) in the second after recording four birdies.
"I am looking for the team to go out confident and determined tomorrow and for everyone to have a good day to move up the leaderboard," Pavon said.
