LAST TIME OUT: Tennessee (2-2) remained perfect at home this season with a 2-1 triumph over Missouri last Friday. Alicia Donley and Jaida Thomas found the back of the net for UT in the win, while goalkeeper Lindsey Romig tallied a career-high tying eight saves—including a tip save over the cross bar with 10 seconds left in regulation that sealed the victory.
Making her first career start against Missouri, Thomas scored her second game-winner of the season with her strike in the 71st minute. The redshirt freshman from Irving, Texas, is tied with four other players for most game-winning goals in the SEC this fall.
Playing 20 minutes off the bench, sophomore Claudia Dipasupil recorded key passes on both goals to record the first two assists of her collegiate career. The first came on a free kick into the box that was headed in by Donley, while the second came as Dipasupil poked a cross from Mackenzie George towards Thomas, who smashed it in with her left foot from close range.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Following her eight-save outing against the Tigers, Romig was selected as the SEC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. She faced a season-high 19 shots and nine shots on goal, none more impactful than a 30-yard Missouri strike with 10 seconds left that was tipped over the cross bar.
Romig is the first Vol to earn SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors since September 14, 2015, when Julie Eckel won the award following back-to-back shutouts against Arkansas and Belmont.
BORDER BATTLE: Tennessee holds a slight edge over Kentucky in the all-time series with a 15-12-2 record against the Wildcats since 1996—including a 6-4-1 mark in Lexington. The Vols are 3-0-2 against Kentucky over the past five seasons, outscoring the Wildcats 11-4 during that span.
The Vols shut out the Wildcats 2-0 at home last fall, as MA Vignola and Isabella Cook accounted for scores in the win. Tennessee held Kentucky without a shot on goal for the entire match, and goalkeeper Lindsey Romig was credited with her first career solo shutout.
Tennessee's last trip to Lexington featured a hat trick for VFL Bunny Shaw, as the 12th-ranked Volunteers topped Kentucky 3-1 on September 28, 2018.
SCOUTING KENTUCKY: After an 0-3 start to the 2020-21 campaign, Kentucky (0-3-1) earned its first point in SEC play with a 1-1 tie against No. 8 Georgia last week. Sophomore striker Jordyn Rhodes has scored all four goals for the Wildcats this season and leads the SEC in that category.
UP NEXT: The Vols return home Friday, October 23, to host the Texas A&M Aggies at Regal Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the match will be streamed online via SEC Network+.
