Vols Post 1-1 Draw At Kentucky Sunday Night
October 18, 2020 | Soccer
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- A 104-minute scoring drought resulted in a 1-1 draw Sunday night, as Tennessee tied Kentucky at the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex. Junior defender Abbey Burdette scored the match's opening goal in the second minute, before the Wildcats equalized in the sixth for the final tally.
Tennessee (2-2-1) wasted no time jumping out to a 1-0 lead, as Burdette tallied her first career goal 81 seconds into the match. Sophomore midfielder Claudia Dipasupil served a corner kick into the box that Burdette smashed in with her head, giving Dipasupil three assists in her last two matches for the Big Orange.
Kentucky (0-3-2) leveled the match just four minutes later, as Wildcat forward Julia Grosso found space at the top of the box and took a 20-yard strike that found its way into the right upper-90.
The Vols outshot the Wildcats 8-6 in the first half, led by four shots on goal from redshirt freshman forward Jaida Thomas. Dipasupil's assist was the only corner kick in the first half, and UT held possession for 53 percent of the opening 45 minutes.
Neither side found the back of the net in the second half, as Tennessee's closest chance came on a rip from Mackenzie George that went off the cross bar in the 75th minute. The Vols earned four corners in the second period, but were unable to convert on any of those opportunities.
The first overtime slot saw a handful of chances for both SEC East rivals, including three corner kicks for the Vols in a 44-second span. George battled for some chances in the second OT period, taking three shots in the final three minutes of the extra frame.
Tennessee amassed a season-high 22 shots on the night, compared to 16 for Kentucky. The Vols led the corner kick battle 9-2 while also gathering an 11-7 lead in fouls.
Goalkeeper and reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Week Lindsey Romig finished the match with seven saves, one shy of tying her career-best set last week against Missouri. The Midlothian, Virginia, native also kept the match square after coming off her line to corral a Kentucky corner kick at the very end of regular time.
UP NEXT: The Vols return home Friday, October 23, to host the Texas A&M Aggies at Regal Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the match will be streamed online via SEC Network+.
