KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee soccer team will face its second consecutive top-10 opponent this week, as the Vols continue conference play at No. 8 Georgia Friday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Turner Soccer Complex in Athens.
Friday's match will be televised on SEC Network, with an online version of the broadcast available at this link. Live stats will be provided via SIDEARM Stats, and fans can follow @Vol_Soccer on Twitter for live match updates.
LAST TIME OUT: Tennessee knocked off No. 10 Vanderbilt 1-0 in overtime for its first win of the season on Sunday. Redshirt freshman forward Jaida Thomas scored the golden goal in the 92nd minute off a corner kick service from junior midfielder Hannah Tillett.
UT keeper Lindsey Romig recorded her fourth-career solo shutout against the Commodores, facing 11 shots and hauling in a pair of saves in Sunday's home opener. Combined with the starting back line of Tara Katz, Mackenzie Ostrom, Wrenne French, Giselle Washington and Abbey Burdette, UT shut out Vanderbilt for the first time since a 3-0 victory in 2013.
Sunday's result marked Tennessee's first win over the Commodores since 2013 and the program's first win over a top-10 opponent since taking down No. 5 Texas A&M in College Station on Oct. 21, 2018.
TEAM OF THE WEEK: Senior defender Wrenne French was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week following Sunday's win over Vanderbilt. The center back from Franklin, Tennessee, recorded a team save and helped limit the Commodores' star forward Haley Hopkins to just one shot on the afternoon.
French also played a key role in setting up the game-winning score for the Volunteers. After Hannah Tillett served a corner kick into the box, French won the head ball that eventually led to redshirt freshman Jaida Thomas tapping in the golden goal from point-blank range.
Additionally, Thomas and Romig were both named honorable mentions for the TDS Team of the Week.
ROOKIE HONOR: Redshirt freshman Jaida Thomas was tabbed as the SEC Freshman of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal against Vanderbilt. It was the first career goal for Thomas, who was making her second appearance for the Big Orange after sitting out last fall due to offseason surgery.
FOR STARTERS: Second-year Vols Claudia Dipasupil, Tara Katz and Giselle Washington each made their first appearances in the Tennessee Starting XI against Vanderbilt. The trio combined for 223 minutes played on Sunday to help the Vols secure the upset victory.
FIRST TIME ON THE HOME PITCH: Freshmen Lawson Renie and Sydney Hennessey made their college soccer debuts on Sunday, logging 21 and 23 minutes respectively. Hannah Tillett, Maddie Eskin, Jaida Thomas and Giselle Washington also logged their first official minutes at Regal Stadium after making their season debuts at Alabama on September 19.
TOP-10, AGAIN: When the Vols take the field at No. 8 Georgia on Friday, it will be their first time playing consecutive top-10 nationally ranked opponents since September of 2006 — when the Lady Vols tied at No. 3 Penn State 1-1 and followed up with a 1-0 overtime victory at home against No. 6 Virginia.
INSIDE THE SERIES: Tennessee holds a 17-8-1 series lead over Georgia, including a commanding 7-2-1 record in the last 10 matchups between the two programs. In Athens, the Vols are 2-1-1 since 2011.
The series' most notable contest was the 2008 SEC Tournament final, when UT defeated UGA 1-0 to capture the program's fourth SEC title in a seven-year span. All-American goalkeeper Jaimel Johnson became the first Lady Vol to be named SEC Tournament MVP, posting a 0.62 goals-against average and 13 saves over the course of the tournament.
SCOUTING GEORGIA: The Bulldogs (1-0-1) sit atop the SEC East standings with four points, opening the season with a 1-0 victory over South Carolina and earning a 1-1 tie at Florida last week. Abby Boyan and Chloe Chapman lead UGA with one goal apiece.
Georgia was picked to finish ninth in the SEC preseason coaches' poll. Five Bulldogs were named to the SEC Preseason Watch List: Boyan, Chapman, Kayla Bruster, Cecily Stoute and Emory Wegener.
UP NEXT: Tennessee will return home Friday, October 9, for another SEC East bout against the Missouri Tigers. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. at Regal Soccer Stadium and will be televised on SEC Network.
