KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The 16th-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team returns to the Goodfriend Tennis Center Friday for a doubleheader against Georgia State at noon, followed by Mercer at 4 p.m. ET.
Admission is free to all regular-season matches and parking is available in Lot N-12 which is located at the corner of Lake Avenue and Volunteer Boulevard. A live stream as well as live results will be available for the match by visiting the men's tennis schedule page on utsports.com or on Twitter (@vol_tennis).
Tennessee's clear bag policy will be in effect.
The Vols (6-1) enter the weekend after suffering their first loss of the season to then No. 18 Columbia, 4-2. Columbia was the third ranked opponent UT had faced in its first seven matches, and the Vols currently hold a 2-1 record vs. such opponents.
Individually, four Vols remain unbeaten in dual match singles play. No. 23 Adam Walton leads the way at 6-0 with graduate transfer Giles Hussey close behind at 5-0. Junior transfer Mark Wallner and freshman Finn Stodder both stand at 1-0 on the year.
CHASING HISTORY
Senior Aussie Scott Jones currently has 82 career victories in singles which places him one win behind Rhyne Williams for 20th all-time in school history. Since his arrival on Rocky Top, Jones has won 20 plus matches each season. His record for 2019-20 stands at 10-5 overall and 4-2 in dual matches.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
Georgia State comes to Knoxville sporting a 1-1 record following a season-opening win over Old Dominion and a loss on the road at No. 4 North Carolina. The Panthers played both matches in Chapel Hill as a part of last week's ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
GSU does not bring any ranked players into the weekend, but they have proven themselves capable of defeating ranked foes. Vazha Shubladze defeated ODU's No. 93 Luca Maldoner in three sets last weekend, his third win over a ranked opponent this season going back into the fall. In doubles, Roberts Grinvalds and Andrei Duarte took down No. 47 Francois Musitelli and Tomislav Podvinski 6-3 in their win over Old Dominion.
Friday will be the first-ever meeting between Tennessee and Georgia State.
SCOUTING THE BEARS
Mercer enters Friday's match at 2-3 on the year, but won its last time out, defeating Presbyterian 4-3. The Bears have suffered two losses to Tulsa and fell on the road at UCF. They opened the dual match season with a win over Oral Roberts.
Oliver Stuart is Mercer's only ranked player in its lineup, coming in at No. 46 in singles. The senior was named the 2019 SoCon Player of the Year and qualified for this fall's Oracle ITA Masters. He is currently 3-1 on the year.
Tennessee and Mercer will meet on the court for the fifth time in program history. The Vols lead the series 4-0, and defeated the Bears last season in Knoxville, 7-0.
UP NEXT
The Vols will close out their eight-match homestand Sunday against Wichita State. The Big Orange and the Shockers will square off at noon ET at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
