Vols Earn a Pair of 7-0 Sweeps Over Georgia State and Mercer

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 16 Tennessee men's tennis team came out firing Friday as it took a pair of 7-0 victories over Georgia State and Mercer at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
Tennessee (8-1) has now swept seven teams this season, tying last year's total in just the first month of the season.
"We're getting better," head coach Chris Woodruff said. "It isn't anything special, it's just good solid work. Trying to work for our points, trying to come together a little bit better, trying to move a little bit better and trying to get a little bit stronger together."
In singles play, No. 23 Adam Walton, graduate transfer Giles Hussey and junior Mark Wallner remained unbeaten, moving to 8-0, 6-0 and 3-0, respectively. Walton now has his longest winning streak of the season and is one win shy of tying the longest win streak of his career.
With his 83rd and 84th career wins on Friday, senior Aussie Scott Jones moved past Rhyne Williams and into a tie with Davey Sandgren for 19th on Tennessee's all-time singles wins list. The Perth, Australia native has won 20 plus matches a year since his arrival on Rocky Top and currently stands at 12-5 overall and 6-2 in dual matches this season.
GEORGIA STATE
The Vols came out quick against the Panthers, winning the doubles point with victories on courts two and three. Walton and doubles partner Martim Prata where first off, with a 6-2 win over Kevin Huynh and Patrick Lazo on court three. Jones and Hussey clinched the doubles point with another 6-2 victory on two against Quentin Coulaud and Bailey Showers.
On court one, Andrew Rogers and Wallner went unfinished versus Andrei Duarte and Roberts Grinvalds, 5-4.
In singles, UT won the first set on all six courts and turned that into straight-set wins on five of six.
Luca Wiedenmann was the first Vol finished on court four as he defeated Huynh 6-1, 6-2. Walton was not far behind as the Home Hill, Australia native dispatched Grinvalds 6-2, 6-0 on court one.
Wallner clinched the match for the Big Orange with his victory on six over Lazo, 6-4, 6-1. Tennessee and Georgia State played out the remaining matches with Jones defeating Coulaud 6-3, 6-3 on court two and Hussey winning over Showers on five, 6-4, 6-3.
Prata sealed the sweep for the Vols with his three-set win over Duarte 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 on court three.
MERCER
As they have done in each their victories this season, the Vols took the doubles point over Mercer with wins on courts one and three. Rogers/Wallner finished first for UT on one as the junior duo defeated Olivier Stuart and Hugo Lobo 6-2. Walton/Prata clinched the point for the Big Orange as they took down Carver Arant and Luca Wayenburg on three, 6-2.
Jones/Hussey were leading David Georgadze and Stathis Tsiranidis 4-3 on court two when the doubles point was clinched. Their match went unfinished.
Walton won his match on court one 6-1, 2-0 after his opponent, Stuart, retired from play. Prata was the second Vol off on court three after he defeated Arant 6-3, 6-1.
Wallner again clinched the match for UT on court six with his 6-1, 6-1 victory over Wayenburg. UT and Mercer continued the match with Jones defeating Lobo 6-3, 7-5 on court two and Wiedenmann taking down Tsiranidis on four, 6-3, 6-4.
Rogers brought home Tennessee's second sweep of the day on court six as he beat Georgadze 6-1, 7-6 (7-3).
