January 17, 2020 | Track & Field
BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Tennessee track & field rookies Emmanuel Bynum and Alex Kay took down a couple of all-time program freshman records Friday night, as UT competed at the Virginia Tech Invitational inside the Rector Field House.
Â
Bynum ran a time of 33.38 in the men's 300-meter dash in the final track event of the night, breaking the previous UT freshman standard of 33.96 set by Dentarius Locke in 2011. The Memphis native Bynum placed himself No. 6 on Tennessee's list of all-time top-10 performers in the men's 300m.
Â
Kay clocked a time of 2:26.97 in the men's 1,000-meter competition to break a UT freshman record that had stood since 1987. The middle distance specialist from Ocala, Florida, topped VFL David Maez's previous rookie record by five hundredths of a second (2:27.03).
Â
Tennessee totaled 11 top-3 finishes on Friday, including event victories in the men's weight throw, women's 60m hurdles and women's triple jump. Read below for more highlights from the first day of the Virginia Tech Invitational.

Rhodes' time was good for a new personal-best and bumped her up to No. 6 on UT's all-time top-10 list.
Â
TRIPLE JUMP U: Tennessee had the top collegiate finishers in both the men's and women's triple jump Friday evening, as Alonie Sutton and Carey McLeod each recorded indoor personal bests.
Â
Sutton took home gold on the women's side with a performance of 13.34m (43-9.25), topping her previous PR by one centimeter. The new mark ranks second in Tennessee history and second in the NCAA this season.
